NSU Volleyball Goes 0-3 at UVA Tournament

Norfolk State lost three matches this weekend in the Marriot Jefferson Cup at Memorial Gym in Charlottesville, Va.

The Spartans fell 30-10, 30-13, 30-20 to Temple Friday afternoon. On Saturday, host UVA downed NSU 30-21, 30-15, 30-19; Arkansas bested the Spartans 30- 19, 30-9, 30-10.

Junior Chantel Cherry was named to the All-Tournament Team after totaling 12 kills, 14 digs and two blocks in the three games.

In the Temple (3-3) game, freshman Heather Quinn and junior Shardonay Blueford had seven kills apiece for the Spartans (0-7).

Yun Yi Zhang had 13 kills, 1.5 blocks and one service ace for the Owls. Cayleigh Ashman hit .643 with nine kills, three aces and two blocks.

Against UVA, Cherry led NSU with eight kills and was in on three blocks. Solange Honore hit a season-high five service aces and had seven digs.

Sarah Kirkwood, another All-Tournament performer, hit a match-high 22 kills for a .525 hitting percentage for the Cavaliers (3-2) and Katie Oakes had 10 kills and two blocks. Kelly Irvin and Marlow Bruneau combined for 37 assists.

Quinn posted seven kills against eventual tournament champion Arkansas (6-1). Cherry and junior Yolanda Roberts each had four kills, and Honore had 17 assists, six digs, and two aces.

Tournament MVP Jessica Dorrell and teammate Sarah Freudenrich each had 10 kills for Arkansas. Dorrell hit .526 with 1.5 blocks and an ace and Lindsay Scanlan had 19 assists and eight aces.

The Spartans take on Hampton in their home opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
