By
Mar 20, 2008

Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had their pitching beaten by the hitting of Longwood (LU) in the Hawks' first night game of the year, 11-2, as the Lancers got to the Hawks' starter Matt Witte for eight earned runs over the first six and a third innings. LU produced eight hits in the game and took advantage of two UMES errors to secure the win.

With the loss the Hawks fall to 0-20 on the season while LU improves to 12-7. The two teams would post goose eggs in the first two and third innings. UMES had a chance in the second with runners on second and third and one out but LU retired the next two Hawks to keep the game scoreless.

The Lancers would then post a commanding four runs in the third inning on three hits before the Hawks got on the board with a lone run in the fifth inning. Tyler Love led-off the inning with a single through the left side. After a pair of strike outs, Remo Orsini would single to the pitcher and go to second on an error by the first baseman. That throwing error would allow Love to go all the way home to record the Hawks' first run.

LU answered with a pair of run in the bottom of the inning. The scored both runs without recording a hit, using the Hawks' two errors of the game to post the runs. The Lancers put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh with five runs on four hits.

UMES added one more run in the eighth when Phillip Vaughn started off with a walk. A single to left center by Orsini pushed Vaughn to third and allowed Orsini to go to second on the throw. Pat Hercinger, the team's RBI leader grounded out but plated Vaughn for the game's final run, finalizing the score at 11-2.

Witte took the loss, dropping to 0-3. Mike Roberts worked a perfect ninth to finish out the game and Ken Richardson relieved Witte in the seventh, working two thirds of an inning, allowing a pair of walks, a hit and a run.

Orsini was 2-3 in the game while Hercinger, Love and Russell Duetschmann accounted for the Hawks' five hits.

For Longwood, Jonathan Watson got the win working seven innings, allowing one run, unearned, four hits, two walks and nine Ks.

No Lancer had more than one hit in the game, spacing out their eight knocks. Robbie Bailey scored three times and Jon Quigley twice. Justin Morreim, Casey Havers and Phil Cerreto all had two RBI each.

UMES will regroup and take on Coppin State this weekend in the final games of the road trip and the first on the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule. They play twice on Saturday and one on Sunday.
