S.C. State Women and Men Win MEAC Tennis Crowns

The South Carolina State women’s and men’s teams captured the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championship titles at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Norfolk State Spartans, 4-0, en route to their fourth consecutive MEAC title and fifth overall. South Carolina State won the doubles point and followed with wins at the number one and two singles position. South Carolina State’s Daria Sekerina defeated Jennifer Astbury at the number five singles spot 6-1, 6-2 to win the match for the Lady Bulldogs.

South Carolina State’s Marcela Rodezno recorded a 3-0 mark at the number two singles position and was named the Outstanding Performer. The Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Hardeep Judge was named the Outstanding Coach for the fourth time on the women’s side.

In men’s action, South Carolina State topped the Florida A&M Rattlers, 4-1, to win their seventh MEAC crown . After winning the doubles point, the Bulldogs won the number one and number three singles point. Florida A&M challenged with a win at the number two singles spot behind the play of Clifford Malivert, who defeated Dmitry Lomakin 7-6, 6-0. Up 3-1, South Carolina State’s Tomas Dobrotka defeated Paul Paige in the third set at the number five singles position to lead the Bulldogs to victory.

Dobratka earned Outstanding Performer accolades after finishing with 2-0 record at the number six position and leading his team to the title. Judge was named the Outstanding Coach for the men’s team for the fourth time in his career.

With the wins, both teams receive automatic qualifications to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Championship. Team selections will be announced on ESPNews on Tuesday, April 29, 2008.
