Norfolk
State’s men’s track and field team won the 2011 Mid-Eastern
Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin
Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
In men's action, the Spartans tallied 162
points en route to their sixth consecutive MEAC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field
Championship. Maryland Eastern Shore finished second with 137 points and Morgan
State followed in third with 72 points.
Hampton’s Damon Dixon posted 23 points in
the field events and was named Outstanding Field Athlete. Mustapha Habbani
tallied 30 points on the track to earn Outstanding Runner.
Delaware State’s Leslie Murray captured gold
in the 400m hurdles breaking a 32-year-old record in 50.29. The previous mark
of 50.31 was held by Howard’s John Branch.
Dixon earned outstanding field honors after
finishing among the top five in the high jump (2.10m), pole vault (4.18m), and
javelin events (44.52m). Habbani swept the distance running events finishing
first in the 5000m (14:44.94), 1500m (3:55.81) and 3000m steeplechase
(9:22.70).
Norfolk State’s Kenneth Giles was named the
Outstanding Coach for the sixth year in a row.
"We started preparing for this in
August. That’s where it all starts in preparation,” said Giles. “We have student-athletes come to our
program knowing our expectations and knowing we like to win. It’s a good
feeling because as a senior goes out of the program a freshman comes in and you
watch them grow from a 18 year old boy to a 22 year old man being productive in
society. That is the best thing
about this."
